Jul 01, 2008 The one reason I liked the aluminum bars was that they could take the same hits that would bend the steel bars and flex back. I tend to cartwheel my bike occasionally and have gone through 1 set of aluminum bars in 5 years vs 3 steel sets in 5 years previous.
Protaper aluminum bars (and the Renthals that emulate them) are made with a thicker stock than handle, which is where the taper part of Protaper comes from. They are more expensive part, but with greater craftsmanship. Aluminum is lighter. Steel can bend and be bent back.
Im looking to replace my handlebars maybe, nothing in particular yet. But Im wondering how people feel about generally using steel vs aluminum for their handlebars material. Steel is stronger of course, but also heavier. Aluminum is lighter, but Ive heard stories of aluminum bending from being banged, or having the bike fall over.

What are the thoughts of the CC collective brain of the pros and cons of alloy bars and steel bars weight considerations aside.
Oct 04, 2016 Aluminium bars are much cheaper to produce, meaning the retail price is often less than the equivalent carbon version; they are also stiffer stiff enough for even the best sprinters in the world.
Oct 31, 2019 All carbon bars use a painted finish while a majority of aluminum bars use a shot peened and anodized finish that is much more durable. + Low Cost. While carbon handlebars are very expensive, aluminum bars will cost you much less. You could buy two sets of alloy handlebars for the cost of one carbon bar.
Aug 21, 2010 Steel would be where I would go because they handle the abuse better, like phragle said aluminum does absorb vibration and flex but steel is made to be beaten on more. I hope I helped even though by now u prolly ordered them anyway lol. 05blasterkid, Aug 13, 2010. #7. darederek likes this.

Apr 07, 2003 The steel ones run about 17-25, and the aluminum bars are about 50 on up. Since Im low on money, Im really leaning towards the steel bars (it looked like there was more vertical height between the crossbar and main bar so rotating them forward should be easier).

Apr 26, 2014 Respect the torque settings that are recommended by the manufacturers. Bicycle frame materials all deliver unique ride characteristics. Titanium rides very differently than Steel, which rides differently than Aluminum which rides different than Carbon. Handlebar materials all have a unique ride characteristic as well.
Knurled steel handlebars certainly have their place, just not inside steel risers, in our opinion. As weve attempted to illustrate, the serrated surfacing can and does bite into aluminum risers. For reasons related to its superior density, tensile- and sheer-strength compared to aluminum, however, we prefer steel for manufacturing Biltwell risers.
Regarding Cor-Ten, in terms of either yield or ultimate strength, if were comparing an aluminum vessel having a hull structure of the same weight as the same vessel design having a Cor-Ten steel structure, it is interesting to note that the aluminum vessel will still be the stronger of the two. This becomes obvious when you consider that aluminum weighs only around 168 lb. per cubic foot ...
Stainless steel is, for example, denser than aluminum, and the scale also proves that stainless steel is a much better conductor of heat than aluminum. The term ferrous next to stainless steel means that it contains (or consists of) iron. Due to the high amounts of carbon used when creating them, most ferrous metals and alloys are vulnerable to ...

Oct 08, 2019 However, aluminum also has its downsides, mostly from our point of view as the roofers. It needs to be made thick, to avoid denting. We also need to coat it, to keep its natural color intact as it ages. Lastly, aluminum needs to be installed without double pins,

Hot extruded profiles in stainless steel offer a solution where a high level of corrosion resistance is necessary. Hot extrusion works well for different type of materials, like aluminium, and also stainless steel or carbon steel.. There are fundamentally two main reasons for redesigning an aluminium shape in steel or even stainless steel: strength and corrosion resistance of the material.

Dec 17, 2008 Aluminum bars are lighter, stronger and usually transmit less vibration. The oversize aluminum bars like pro tapers are particularly good. Ive not noticed a difference regarding grip heaters. I personally wont ride off road with steel bars as they bend so easily as to be a danger imho (I bent a pair years ago just from a jump landing gone bad ...

Just because you have seen something specific happen does not mean that it is the thing that happens most often statistically.
Feb 25, 2017 Windows and doors were never made from aluminum until the mid 20 th century. Steel was the metal that dominated the market before then dating back to the 19 th Century. Cast iron storefronts can still be found in building of the late 1800s, however, hot-rolled steel became the most popular option once it was discovered.

Mar 22, 2016 Was pricing out some .187 stainless for a home project and the price for the flat bar of the same size was over 2x the cost of the plate. Not sure on stainless, but on aluminum, plate is usually that - a large plate, think like a sheet of plywood. Bar is just that bars of extruded stock.

Steel is a metallic alloy of iron and a few other elements. In this lesson, we will compare and contrast aluminized steel and stainless steel based on the elements in them and their properties.
Oct 03, 2021 The main drawback to steel is the weight. Steel is the heaviest bike frame material in use. This makes the bike slower and less efficient than carbon or aluminum. Steel can also rust if its not properly taken care of. Check out my steel vs aluminum bike frames guide for more info. Titanium Bike Frames. Titanium is a favorite of custom frame ...

Jul 14, 2015 The bending moment of inertia is pi/4 times (OR to the fourth power minus the IR taken to the fourth power). Stiffness is defined as the product of moment of inertia and elastic modulus. In the case of aluminum vs. steel the elastic modulus for aluminum is about 1/3 that of steel. That can be compensated in handlebars by increasing the wall ...

Carbon vs aluminum: when choosing new frames and components, its one of the most common questions customers ask. When youre looking for road handlebars or mountain bike handlebars , there are a few important points to consider which will help guide your decision.
Feb 15, 2019 Aluminum vs Steel: Cost. When comparing the two alloys, the cost of steel vs aluminum is one of the most important factors in determining which materials to use for a job. When it comes to the cost of steel vs aluminum, steel is usually less expensive. In saying this though, we must distinguish which type of steel were talking about.
Jun 02, 2018 Re: Handlebars:Ti vs carbon vs aluminum Just to throw a wrench in things, Surly makes a chromoly Cheater bar. 780mm wide, 11 backsweep, flat top, 400g. A 730mm Carver Prybar is advertized 730g, so they might be the same weight when you account for the extra width.
Aug 28, 2013 Aluminum is a metal that is used in a few of our products. However, the majority of our materials use steel. Both steel and aluminum are great metals that you can find just about anywhere. But is there a time when one is better than the other? Truth be told, the subject of aluminum vs. steel
Aluminum Alloy Wheels. Aluminum wheels (sometimes called alloy wheels) are built with a blend of aluminum and nickel. The majority of wheels today are cast aluminum alloy, meaning theyre made by pouring molten aluminum into a mold. They are lightweight but strong, withstand heat well and are generally more attractive than steel wheels.
Most aluminum alloys will become dangerously soft at around 400C (roughly 750F), whereas the melting point of 304 stainless steel sits around 1400C (roughly 2550F). While stainless steel will likely soften before this melting point, this still provides at least twice (and possibly) three times greater temperature tolerance than aluminum.
Aug 23, 2021 When comparing stainless steel vs aluminum, stainless steel has much better resistance to heat with a melting point of 2500 , while aluminum becomes very soft around 400 with a melting point of 1220 . However, aluminum has the advantage over steel in cold temperatures. As the temperature decreases, the tensile strength of aluminum ...
The yield strength is the measure of the maximum amount of stress that will not permanently (or just lastically) deform a specimen of alloy (to learn more on this topic, feel free to read about it in our article all about 7075 aluminum alloy). When comparing 6061 and 7075 aluminums yield strengths, it is evident that 7075 aluminum is far superior by a factor of almost 2.
Aluminum vs Steel Cost. Cost and price are always an essential factor to consider when making any product. The price of steel and aluminum is continually fluctuating based on global supply and demand, fuel costs and the price and availability of iron and bauxite ore; however steel is generally cheaper (per pound) than aluminum (see galvanized vs stainless for more info on steel).
Nicely finished aluminum handlebars that imitate perfectly the curves of classic, signature Schwinn bars of the 60s and 70s - with the added advantage that the only significant difference is a longer straight hand-grip area that allows the addition of accessories and twist shifters that cannot be installed beyond the first curve of the bars ...
Aluminum is about one-third the weight of steel, meaning parts can be made thicker and stronger while still reducing weight in vehicles and other applications. Depending on the alloy and processing technique used, pound for pound aluminum can be forged to be just as strong if not stronger than some steel .
