Feb 16, 2015 02-15-2015, 10:52 AM. Hi! Last year on my 2007-er Canyon Nerve EX 8.0 I noticed a crack on the head tube (see attached image): Unfortunately, the bike was over the guarantee period, thus it cant be sent back to the manufacturer. Since I really love this bike, I am trying to find a fix to save it, it would be a pity to toss it in the garbage.
Apr 29, 2018 Even if you fix that crack you might find another crack on the right hand side, mirroring this crack. What is more, the crack will go considerably deeper. I had a crack at the same spot and we asked the manufacturer (Corratec). According to their frame builder welding would warp the head tube too much to seat the head set properly.
I seem to remember Mike Burrows advocating a similar head / down tube repair using grp. In the lab at work (non bike) I rarely see a successful simple weld repair of any kind of fatigue crack.
Answer (1 of 5): NEVER attempt to repair an aluminum frame. Here are a couple of reasons why: 1. When the frame failed there is no easy way to tell if there is other structural damage. You cant just bend an aluminum frame back into shape and weld it; 2. If the frame cracked then there is a high...
The damage is on the lower side of the down tube - upwards from the bottom bracket, but before the bend where the tube leads up to the head tube. I have asked if there is any other damage/distortion and the owner has said there is not. Unfortunately the frame isnt nearby so Im relying upon the owners responses (and honesty).

That area of the bike is under a lot of stress, especially when you factor in the breaking. That crack will throw off the internal diameter of the tube, which means the headset cup may come loose or break off altogether. Cracked aluminum cannot be repaired and will spread/degrade much faster than steel.
Answer (1 of 7): NO! Do NOT attempt to repair cracks on any bicycle frame regardless of material with JBWeld OR any type of epoxy. First, most cracks in an aluminum frame, especially when they are in the tube rather than at a weld signifies fatigue. Attempting a repair without knowing the cause...
Dec 01, 2013 RC Shakesheff A fatigue crack, beginning underneath and close to the head-tube/down-tube junction, then growing upwards, is a common frame failure mode. It arises simply from riding the bicycle: ver the rocky roadsteads of this parish, as Flann OBrien put it. One generally has to ride a bike a whole lot further than you and your wife are likely to have ridden in only five
An obvious design flaw. Since I cant weld aluminum, and always wanted to repair a cracked frame with fiberglass and resin, I repaired the frame this way: At first, I brazed a steel base layer, which distributes the force from the dropout better to the brittle aluminum frame. With a lot of good glue and some fibres, I glued the steelframe to ...

The best thickness of tube is probably .058 inches. The thickness is important because you want it to match the bike frame tubes as closely as possible, so that it is easier to weld. Clamp your tube in a vice and and cut a slit down the center of it about 2 inches long with a

Nov 12, 2021 A simple way to correct a rearward bend in a steel fork is to turn the fork around backward and slam the bicycle into a wall again -- but that may only further damage the frame, which may already have damage, just behind the head tube, making the head tube angle steeper. (An aluminum or carbon-fiber frame will more likely either be undamaged or ...
Aug 27, 2015 Simply mount the bike in a repair stand, or even lean bike against a wall. Measure and note the head tube angle. Compare this to the seat tube angle. If the two are within a degree, the bike should be adequately aligned. For example, if the head tube reads 89-degrees, the seat tube should read between 88 and 90-degrees.

Hi, My question relates to the restoration of an old 1985 Pashley frame. I have been restoring it slowly with the intention of rebuilding it into a vintage style path racer. when I stripped it, I noticed a tiny crack at the very top of the head tube at the rear directly above the top tube.
