Oct 23, 2016 For the first time I'm trying to mill some aluminum with my Shapeoko 2, and am wondering what bit to use. The spindle is the small Quiet One they sold at the time. The aluminum is 1/8" plate, and I need to first cut out some slots (slightly wider than 1/8" and about 1/2" long) and then contour around the edge to cut out the design.

With a 2.2kw water cooled spindle, a custom Z-axis very similar to the HDZ, I can easily rough 5mm depth at 1800mm/min, about 1.5mm cut width with adaptive toolpath. Nice big shavings and limited thermal build-up (I use no coolant, just a bit of lubricant).

That, and the fact that it is so long I know there had to be some flex in the body. I finally found a diamond drag bit that is small and fits in my 1/4" collet DeWalt router.
There are no tears shed over broken, dropped, or lost tools but they cut fabulously and last a long time. I use these for learning (there is a lot of learning with a lightweight CNC). If you are trying to leak out performance, carbide 3d sells a ton of high quality tools, especially for aluminum.

The shapeoko is obviously nice because it comes in kit form. However, it's on the weaker side of machines that I'm considering but that is to be expected as the price is quite low. I wouldn't even bother with the dremel like spindle though. I like the Ox, as it looks to be a pretty strong machine for what it is.

Tightening everything up will help this.

In some materials (especially soft plastics like HDPE), an alternative option is to leave a thin onion skin at the bottom of the profile cut, by limiting the cutting depth to something slightly less than the stock thickness. The onion skin should be thick enough to keep the piece from moving, but thin enough to be easily cut manually afterwards with e.g. a X-acto blade.
